Chinese Orange Chicken

I love me some Asian, Chinese, or Japanese food more than any other food in the world, however... the ingredients are not so good... which is why you see a lot of recipes on here for Chinese type food! I love to recreate delicious things that we miss when we are trying to make ourselves healthier :) 

This recipe is full of bold flavors and those sweet and savory flavors we all love! I hope you all enjoy this recipe as much as I do! The best part about this recipe is it only takes about 20 minutes to make! 

Some notes on this recipe: there are some ingredients in here that you may not be familiar with (coconut aminos and potato starch) I suggest trying them! It's always fun to add new things into our diets. However, if you aren't up for it some alternatives are: any other oil for sesame oil can be replaced without any taste difference. Changing the coconut aminos will change the flavor of the dish, and the other ingredients may not be in the right ratios so if you want to play around with it the same ingredients other than that it  will taste like it when you adjust and find the right ratios :)  The other alteration you can make is corn starch in place of the potato starch, potato starch makes this paleo and whole30 and doesn't change the flavor, so again, try it out!  

Why coconut aminos? I like coconut aminos because they are much lower in sodium (which is why we add some salt, so it does taste similar to Chinese food minus the crazy sodium levels) 



3 cloves of garlic

1 C orange juice

2 tsp sesame oil

6 tbsp coconut aminos

orange zest 

pinch of red pepper flakes 

white ends of green onion

1 tsp minced ginger 

salt and pepper to taste 

1 tbsp potato starch 

1 tsp sesame seeds

green ends of green onion 

2 lbs chicken, I used stir fry cut but you can use any kind you want cut into small pieces :) 


  1. heat a pan over medium-high with some sesame oil in it

  2. add chicken and cook until done, set aside

  3. in the same pan, add in a little more sesame oil then garlic, ginger and the white ends of the green onion and sauté until fragrant

  4. once those are cooked, turn down to low-medium heat, then add in orange juice, coconut aminos, rice vinegar, orange zest, red pepper flakes and salt*

  5. stir sauce while it simmers for 2-3 minutes, I suggest thickening the sauce with potato starch so that its more of the ideal consistency, once you stir and the sauce goes back together slow (somewhat sticky) add in chicken and mix well

  6. Add the green part of the green onions and sesame seeds

I pair this chicken with some white rice and sautéed bok choy! If you are doing a whole30 just sub some sautéed cauliflower rice instead :)
